Early Life and Background
Oba Femi was born Isaac Odugbesan in Lagos, Nigeria, on April 22, 1998. A Nigerian newspaper commentary names his parents as Maria and Niyi Odugbesan. He grew up in a country with a deep tradition of combat sports and athletics, and his size and strength marked him out early.
Track and field became his first serious sport. He competed in throwing events through high school and then moved to the United States to compete at the collegiate level. He joined the University of Alabama, where he trained and competed in the shot put in the Southeastern Conference, one of the toughest athletic leagues in American college sports. He earned All-America recognition as a shot putter.
The shot put rewards explosive power, a big frame, and technical precision, and all three carried over to wrestling. Throwers learn to generate force from the ground up and to control a heavy body at speed.
His path changed when the NCAA introduced name, image, and likeness (NIL) rules, which let college athletes earn money from their personal brand. WWE launched its Next In Line program for college athletes, and Odugbesan was among the first recruits. A shot putter with a 6 ft 6 in frame was an obvious fit for a company that has always valued size.
Career Journey and Timeline
August 2021: Odugbesan attends a WWE tryout while still competing at Alabama.
December 8, 2021: He signs with WWE through the Next In Line program, joining the first class of NIL recruits.
August 2022: He reports to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, to begin training. This phase covers ring fundamentals, promo work, and conditioning.
2023: He debuts on NXT under the name Oba Femi. “Oba” means king or ruler in Yoruba, which suits a character built on intimidation and dominance. Crowds and WWE officials quickly noticed his athleticism, especially his ability to move like a much smaller man.
2024: This is his breakout year. He wins the NXT Men’s Breakout Tournament, becomes the youngest NXT North American Champion in history, and wins the Men’s Iron Survivor Challenge. His North American Championship reign lasts roughly 272 days, a record for the title, and he later holds the NXT Championship twice. During this stretch he also appears on TNA Impact through WWE’s partnership with that promotion.
2026: He reaches the main roster and makes an immediate impact at WrestleMania 42 by defeating Brock Lesnar. He then wins the 2026 King of the Ring tournament. At SummerSlam 2026 he faces Lesnar again inside Hell in a Cell, a match after which Lesnar publicly declared Femi the future of the company.
His nicknames, “The Ruler” and “The Destroyer of Worlds,” match his in-ring style, which is built around power, imposing offense, and a calm, confident presence. He is a main-event player and one of WWE’s most important African stars.
Oba Femi’s Physical Appearance in Detail
At a billed 6 ft 6 in and about 302 lb, Oba Femi has the build of a classic super-heavyweight, with a wide chest, thick shoulders, and powerful legs. His shot put training shows in his upper body strength, but he is lean enough to move quickly, which sets him apart from many wrestlers of his size.
His skin is dark brown and he has dark eyes. He usually keeps his head closely shaved or bald, and he sometimes wears facial hair. His heritage is part of his image and is often highlighted in his presentation.
His ring gear leans toward bold, regal looks, with gold accents and dark colors that reinforce the “Ruler” image. Entrance gear and robes add to the sense of royalty. Fans and analysts often call his presence “main-event ready,” partly because his size reads clearly on screen and in an arena.
His weight has been listed at several figures over time, including 310 lb, 302 lb, and in some places 270 lb or 273 lb. Wrestling companies adjust billed numbers for storytelling, so these should be treated as approximate.
Oba Femi Height Comparison
Oba Femi stands among the taller performers in a company that favors big men, though he is not the tallest. Several well-known names have been billed at similar or greater heights. Because these are billed figures, small differences are normal.
| Wrestler | Billed Height |
|---|---|
| Omos | 7 ft 3 in (221 cm) |
| Braun Strowman | 6 ft 8 in (203 cm) |
| Oba Femi | 6 ft 6 in (198 cm) |
| Gunther | 6 ft 4 in (193 cm) |
| Brock Lesnar | 6 ft 3 in (191 cm) |
| Roman Reigns | 6 ft 3 in (191 cm) |
Femi is taller than both Lesnar and Reigns, two of the best-known power wrestlers of the past two decades. The visual contrast is useful for storytelling, since a taller challenger facing an established monster looks like a credible threat. He is shorter than Omos, but he moves with far more agility.
How Height Shaped His Career and Public Image
In wrestling, a big frame signals a threat before a match begins. Femi’s height gives him a visual advantage that producers can build on. His size makes him look like a champion even when he is still new to a roster, and it helped WWE position him as a “final boss” for veterans.
The key difference is how he uses it. Many tall wrestlers move slowly and rely on size alone. Femi’s athletic background lets him add mobility and finesse to a big-man style. A 198 cm man who can sprint, jump, and control his weight stands out from a pure powerhouse, and this blend of size and athleticism is a large part of why he rose so quickly.
His height also helped him make a mark before WWE. Elite shot putters are usually tall with long levers, which help in the throwing circle. In the ring, that same reach gives him a long wingspan for strikes, grapples, and slams.
His size also adds to his symbolic weight. His billed height and physique make him a natural face for African wrestling fans, and WWE has actively promoted him as a bridge to the African market. Standing out visually helps him sell that story.
The head-to-head with Brock Lesnar shows how his size helps in a main-event situation. A taller, younger opponent facing a legendary power wrestler gives the audience a clear “next generation” narrative without extra explanation.
What He Has Said About His Height
Oba Femi has not made many widely reported public statements about his height. Most of the attention on it comes from commentary, fans, and WWE’s own presentation. He has more often spoken about his journey and what it means to others.
In interviews, he has focused on representation, saying his goal is to let African kids know they can dream big and that becoming a wrestler is possible. His size is part of that message, since it helps him stand out as a symbol of what is achievable.
He has also credited his track and field background, especially the shot put, for his athleticism and discipline. In this telling, his physical gifts matter because of the work behind them, and he rarely frames them as a gift of genetics alone.
If he gives a more detailed interview about height in the future, those remarks would be worth tracking, but for now there is little on the record beyond his billed measurements.
Personal Life Brief
Oba Femi keeps most of his personal life private. He was born in Lagos to Maria and Niyi Odugbesan, and he has a close connection to his Nigerian roots and Yoruba heritage. He has said his path in wrestling is partly about showing young Africans what is possible.
He has not made details of any romantic relationship widely public, and there is no verified information on a marriage or children. He lives and trains in the United States as part of the WWE system and has spent much of his adult life there since moving for college.
He is 28, which is young for a main-event star and suggests a long career ahead. Most of his public presence centers on his work, his wrestling success, and his role as a representative for Nigeria and the wider African wrestling community.
